Hey everyone, welcome to #SpinaBifida
A big debate going on right now in our society
is whether or not we as a society should ban plastic straws.
And I get it, plastic straws hurt our planet.
We want to take care of our planet so
we are banning plastic straws in public places
and forcing people to bring reusable straws.
But what if I told you that, that isn't an option
for most disabled people.
In fact, it can be dangerous for most disabled people.
Let’s look at how reusable straws can be a problem for
a disabled person.
This list is gunna be long so make sure you grab a nice accessible snack.
First up, metal straws.
While metal straws may be good for most,
I myself use one.
It can cause harm for others with disabilities such asbamboo straw wholesaling
a bio-degradable straw can still cause harm to disabled people by
There's a pattern on how this list is going
so we're just gunna get to the information.
Some users need to take the time to drink,
and the straw will begin to get mushy
and not work.
Disabled people need plastic straws
to not only eat and drink, but to take medicine.
We’re aware of the environmental impact
a lot of products have when they’re not recycled.
And we already carry a plethora of guilt
for the medical supplies we use on a daily basis
to keep us alive that are not recyclable.
But guilting us by saying there’s no excuse
without actively trying to listen and understand how
vital plastic straws isn't going to help us.
Or the environment.
It’s going to make our lives harder to live
and in some cases, result in death.
Also the argument of "just bring a reusable straw"
or "I know a disabled person who brings their straw"
is just a gas light attempt to guilt us.
I am a disabled person who tries to bring my metal straw.
But like other people with disabilities
my disability causes a lot of cognitive memory issues
which causes me to forget things.
Like bringing a straw.
Having the option to use a plastic straw when
I'm out in society is a life saver.
And helps me when I'm having a hard time.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t care for the environment
or look for more sustainable ways to help it survive.
But we should stop harming disabled lives
with these plastic straw bans.
And start pressuring businesses to do better
with recycling and making recycled goods.
Pressure companies to create biodegradable straws
and other items that are good for the environment
but are also accessible for disabled people.
You don't have to use straws at all,
and yes that will help the enviorment a little.
But plastic straws should still be an option
for disabled people when they need it.
And their needs and if they're disabled
to need these plastic straws on a "medical basis"
isn't something for you to decide.
Let's stop shaming and harming marginalized communities
and start including them in the work to find
accessible solutions to save our planet.
And that's all I have for you for today on #SpinaBifida.
